How Marketers Can Win Over Fantasy Sports Fans

In May 2018, The United States Supreme Court struck down a 1992 Federal Law that banned sports betting in most states. Since then, the United States has seen increased interest and usage in sports gambling and fantasy sports.

Knowing the profile of consumers who enjoy fantasy sports will be interesting for marketers promoting mobile devices, headphones and other tech, as well as furniture, snack foods, energy drinks and more. Read on to get the score on these specialty sports fans.

In our monthly survey of U.S. Adults 18+, we ask consumers about their participation in sports gambling and fantasy sports with fascinating results!

Fantasy Football is Ahead of the Pack

With more than a quarter of U.S. adults participating in fantasy football (27%), you probably know someone who has a fantasy football team, regularly checking NFL stats. Fantasy baseball comes in second with 12% participation, and fantasy basketball comes in third with 11%.

Fantasy Sports and Gambling

Fantasy sports participants are also gamblers. Among those participating in fantasy sports, 77% gamble on sports. Among those gamblers who play fantasy sports, we found that 24% use DraftKings Sportsbook and 21% use FanDuel Sportsbook to place their bets.

Profile of Fantasy Sports Participants

  • 68% of fantasy sports participants live in suburban areas.
  • 64% are male.
  • 55% are college educated.
  • They are more likely to be aged 25-34 (26%) and make over $100k per year (29%), compared to the general population.

After years of bad calls by referees, we find that fantasy sports participants and sports gamblers are more comfortable with AI being used as sports referees in games compared to non-fantasy sports participants and non-sports gamblers.

AIForSportsRefsTable We found that fantasy sports participants and sports gamblers are more likely to buy new technology like a smartphone in the next month and to purchase a long-distance trip.
